At Jules Destrooper, they have been making biscuits in an artisanal way for over 130 years, using only natural ingredients, using fair production methods! But how did this delicious biscuit history begin?
A small, cosy bakery in Lo in West Flanders is the beginning of an unprecedented history in Belgian biscuit country. On 8 August 1885, Julius Renatus Maria Destrooper opened his shop, which he combined with colonial goods from Asia and Africa. This clever move set him apart from the other five bakers in the village, and customers came to Lo mainly for his coffee, tobacco, chocolate and spices.
Almond bread, Jules Destrooper's first biscuit, was a promotional gift to customers.
Jules went to work in his bakery using the spices from his shop and turned them into wafer-thin almond bread. He gave this to his customers as a promotional gift. However, this biscuit proved such a success and later managed to win La Médaille D'or at the prestigious food fair in Paris in 1911, that soon more people came to Lo for his Almond Bread than for the exotic merchandise. In 1890 we celebrated the birth of the widely known Jules Destrooper Boterwafel, or better known in West Flanders as Lukke! This wafer owes its origins to the New Year's wish (Lukken) for which, as a child, you were given thin, hard wafers in exchange. In West Flanders, traditional wafers are still baked around New Year. In 1923, the natural butter waffle won a gold medal at the prestigious food fair in Brussels!
From 1969 to 1992, many more classics from Jules Destrooper's oven followed, including the Paris Waffle, the Hazelnut Florentines, the famous Cinnamon Biscuits in Milk Chocolate and the Kletskoppen. For which Jules bought the authentic recipe from Bakkerij De Hollander in 1990. All this biscuit history was brought together in one festive box: the Jules Finest!
